Why Do We Call Mary the Mother of God?

When you sit back and think about it, God could have saved us any way He wanted.

But He chose to send us His Son - through the Blessed Mother.

Because of that, Mary is an integral part of salvation history - God's plan to make you and me saints.

That means we should be seeking her help constantly.

We should be going back to God in the same manner that He came to us - through Mary.

In fact, that's what this month, dedicated to the Holy Rosary, is all about.

Unfortunately, many of our separated brethren don't have this understanding of Mary's role in God's plan of salvation.

To them (and to me, before I became Catholic!), Mary is a peripheral figure - a holy woman, but not someone worthy of the level of veneration Catholics give her.

Even Mary's title, 'Mother of God,' causes them consternation.

Is it really necessary to go that far?

Wouldn't it make more sense to simply call her 'Mother of Jesus?'

As it turns out - yes, it is necessary.

And no, it wouldn't.

Because Our Lady's identity as the Mother of God isn't just about her.

It's fundamental to everything the Church teaches about Christ.

In today's Sainthood Snippet, I'll explain why.

God bless!
